Provenance: The mirror was made for Dr. Thomas Dewees (1768-1841). He was married twice; his first wife was Martha Rogers and his second wife was Mary Lorrain. It descended in the family.

Reference: There are a pair of similar mirrors in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. They are illustrated in Marshall Davidson and Elizabeth Stillinger, The American Wing, pages 68 – 69, figure 82.
