Provenance: Descended in the Gardiner family of New York to Robert Lion Gardiner. By family tradition it was ordered through Philadelphia and originally hung in the Gardiner’s Island Manor House. David Gardiner, (1738-1774) is the likely original purchaser of the looking glass.
