Southbury, Connecticut   Circa 1765
Primary Wood: Cherry
Secondary Wood: White Pine
Height: 30 inches
Width: 36 inches
Depth: 21 1/2 inches
Provenance: Made for the Osborne Family of Southbury, Connecticut. It was probably made for the Deacon Timothy Osborne (born in Newtown, Connecticut on August 28,1720, died in Southbury, February 3, 1807) of Southbury, Connecticut and his wife Rachel Judd (born 1726, died January 14, 1795) of Danbury. They were married July 19,1744. Family history states that the lowboy was given to Barnum Osborne (1764-1852) and Olive Hicock Osborne (1761-1853) in 1785 as a wedding present. This is according to the inscription on the back of an old photograph of the lowboy (‘Wedding present for Barnum Osborne and Olive Hicock Octo 13th, 1785’). At their death, it must have been left to Cyrus Bristol Osborne (born 1840) and Belle Tiffany Osborne (born 1851), who were married on September 2, 1872, and finally to their daughter, Zeta Osborne Rening (born August 28, 1876), the applicant for membership into the DAR.
Reference: The only other similar lowboy recorded having these particular elements of design is illustrated in Connecticut Furniture-Seventeenth and Eighteenth Centuries Catalogue of the 1967 Show at The Wadsworth Athenaeumm, No. 176.
